RIP, O'Leary's Irish Diamond

Breyer recently passed along some very sad new via their Facebook page. O'Leary's Irish Diamond, the subject of a popular Breyer Portrait model and a guest at this summer's BreyerFest, has died.

O'Leary's Irish Diamond was a Registered Irish Draught, who was imported to the United States in 1997 after receiving stunningly high marks from the Irish Horse Board breed registry.  He continued to receive stellar reviews and scores throughout his career, which included dressage, jumping, and eventing.

Aborted art projects

Bronze Mask: © 2003 Teri ThomasBronze Mask: © 2003 Teri ThomasSchool starts in a little over a week, and I'm packing to move. Time for a major purge. I'm getting rid of all my "bad karma" art projects - things that I either never liked, didn't finish, or that broke somewhere along the way.

Getting rid of them is a huge relief, actually. Frees up my energy to make new things rather than worry about what to do with all the old things.

I made this bronze mask a few years ago in foundry class at another school. I can't even say why I don't like it, but I don't. I never even photographed it until a few minutes ago. However, I think it will make a nice garden ornament for my friend Jacque. It will be interesting to see how its patina changes from being out in the weather.

First, did I overpay for them? ($19.00) Be honest. It's the only way I'll learn. I've started collecting stablemates only now, and have a little extra money to spend lately (usually it's spent on my horse, but I got a job now. lol) But I still don't want to spend a fortune on things. Anyway, one of my favorite SM models is the old little draft (can't recall the name that starts with an "R"). So I pretty much had to win the auction for the draft, not so much the foal. Most (in better condition) are $30-$100. What would be a reasonable price to pay for one in good shape?

Alborozo Madness

Among non-hobbyists there is a perception that old Breyer horse models are worth a lot of money.  For the most part this is untrue - between the sheer volume of Breyer models at large in the world, and the poor condition most of them are in, most collectors are lucky to get list price for their models.

There is one notable exception to this rule, and that exception is Alborozo.

The real Alborozo is a gorgeous Andalusian stallion who lives at Kilimanjaro Ranch in California.  His likeness was cast by Breyer for their 2008 BreyerFest Celebration model, which was well received by collectors at the time.  His windswept mane and pose (a very collected canter?  About to rear up?  I confess to being baffled) were designed by Breyer sculptor Brigitte Eberl.  His dapple gray and detailed shading is lovely.

Ponies on Parade

In Ponies on Parade by Jeanne Betancourt, Anna is the star. Anna loves to draw and is great with painting. Her Pony Pal friends think so highly of her, they encourage her to enter a contest that is going on for the Fall Festival. Only ten winners will be selected to paint their creative idea onto a life-size pony and Pam and Lulu think that Anna has it in the bag. The only problem is that the girls have a three page report due the same day as the contest submission and Anna hasn’t even started her report.

Decreasing my herd--many discontinued & special runs!

I am selling a majority of my Breyer collection. Some were played with and have light rubs or marks but most were removed from their box to be displayed in a clean nonsmoking home. Please let me know if there are any molds or models you are looking for. I am in the process of putting together a complete list. Prices are negotiable.

Breyer 2011 Theme Announced

Every year Breyer has a theme, and organizes a surprising number of their releases and events around it.

For example, this year's theme was "Hollywood," which not only informed the events and decorations at BreyerFest, it also affected the models they released.  (Elvis Presley's palomino "Rising Sun" is still Product of the Week on the Breyer website, by the way.)

2011's theme, as announced by Breyer at this year's BreyerFest, is "FairyTails."  Get it?  Tails?  Like how horses have tails?  I know.  The puns: they hurt us.
